I think that makes a ton of sense, Chris. I was really interested to hear a report on NPR recently about the relatively low level of support for gun control among African American people and my first thought was, “Well of course.” If the police had declared open season on my entire race, I’d want a gun too.” A lot of the anti-gun control people I’ve met on Twitter are white working class people in red states. Economically speaking, their backs are up against the wall and the pressure is mounting. We can’t discount the influence of that. But neither thing — economic equality nor tough gun law—will happen perfectly, one before the other. We have to push for both. It’s also very important that anti-gun control people become aware— just as smokers once did—of just how much the gun industry manipulates them… how they are regarded by the gun industry as a target market. That’s something that caused a real sea change with smoking. We need the equivalent of “the insider” in the tobacco industry who exposed how profoundly poor people are being manipulated by big corporations who have duped them into thinking of this as a lifestyle versus merely a product.
