White House: We’re phasing out DACA
- The Trump administration is ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, an Obama-era policy that protected young undocumented immigrants from deportation.
- Roughly 800,000 young adults who were born outside the U.S. but have lived in the country for a decade are now at risk. However, Congress still has a chance to act before those under DACA lose their ability to work and study in America.
- Major companies and business leaders have called on Trump to defend DACA. Microsoft today vowed to protect its DACA employees in court against deportation.
- There’s already a shortage of young workers in the U.S., and economists say that repealing DACA could make the problem worse. More than 75% of people covered under DACA hold high-skilled jobs, earning over $17 an hour, according to the National Immigration Law Center.
