In the podcast episode An Anarchist Approach to Prepping in an Age of Climate Change, Margaret Killjoy explains that the triangle of preparedness consists of gears, skills, and relationships. Killjoy insists that we do not privilege one dimension of preparedness over another, and start by focusing on whichever we are personally strongest in. After living in a west coast city for nine years I am limited in skills and gear, but feeling wealthy in relationships. And so, as strange as it feels to do this, I’ve decided to begin an inventory of my friends and their incredible skills and quirks that make it a little easier to live through this apocalypse and the next.
ES can turn raw wool into yarn, and weave yarn into fabric
AC is confident in reading tide charts for traversing the sea safely
BS is good at preserving food for the lean months of the year
BK and MK are well practiced and hard working farmers
RC is deeply attuned to plants and fungi and wonderful at harvesting them with care
RC and JW can make a new friend every time they leave the house
RC is a dedicated dumpster diver and improvisational chef
EA is fixated on preparedness for the big one, raising worms, and ceramics
EA is very good at organizing people for food based mutual aid
SR is skilled in tanning animal hides and fighting with nunchucks
SM ferments the most delicious hot sauces and loves to feed his friends
MG is great and documenting and reporting on social movements
DR is a skilled bike mechanic and long distance cycler
Many of these pals also have the stickiest of fingers…
