Kwanzaa Day 5: Nia — Purpose
Nia: To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.
This principle is as important to me, personally as Umoja (unity). It is stating that we as a Black people group will individually work on our purposes so that it will benefit us collectively. We focus on becoming who we are supposed to be, and we will all be great because of it.
Your greatness being a surgeon, while his greatness may be being a chemist. Her greatness may be in creating jewelry while my greatness may be in writing. Others will be great at husbandry while others can be great in accounting, organizational leadership, or drawing. however, when you put our greatness together as a community we have doctors’ pharmacists, perfumers’ artisans, agriculturalists businesspeople, and writers.
What is amazing about this principle, is that you are never too young or too old to put it in play. As I put the unity of self into practice this year, I will also be focused on purpose, because I believe that for me personally, they go hand and hand. I look forward to reviewing this article at the end of 2023 and seeing where my mindset is.
These are my thoughts.
