Productivity Difference in the Age of Language Models like ChatGPT

Integrating advanced language models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT revolutionizes how we access information and complete tasks. But it’s also leading toward an inevitably increasing difference between productive and non-productive people.

As the access to information and tools becomes easier, productive people can utilize these resources more effectively and become even more effective. But non-productive people risk becoming more reliant on these models and become less productive day by day.

Productive People Get Even More Productive

Productive people are always looking for ways to improve efficiency and get more done in less time. With the integration of language models in search engines, they now have access to a vast amount of information and resources at their fingertips.

People can now ask questions in natural language and receive accurate and relevant answers, freeing up time and energy that would have otherwise been spent searching for information through browsing webpages after webpages.

Additionally, language models can help productive people automate many tasks and streamline their workflow. Language models can make these tasks faster and easier, whether writing an email, creating a report, or organizing their schedule. This gives productive people even more time and energy to focus on what they do best.

For example, a productive person might use a language model to create a report on a complex topic. By asking the model to summarize the key points and provide relevant information, they can complete the report much faster than they would be able to on their own.

Language models are good at coding too. You can simply ask for a framework template, code snippets, comments, and conventions of a particular programming language. Productive people would request code snippets and eventually integrate them to meet their needs.

Non-Productive People Risk Becoming Even Less Productive

On the other hand, non-productive people risk becoming more reliant on language models and less productive as a result. Instead of taking the time to learn and develop new skills, they may use language models to complete tasks for them. This can lead to a vicious cycle of dependence and decreased productivity.

A non-productive person might use a language model to write a report for them. While the information may be well-written, the non-productive person may lack developing the skills to understand the topic and independently write an essay or code a program. As a result, they will be less equipped to handle similar tasks. They may become increasingly reliant on language models to complete them.

Moreover, non-productive people may also become more passive in their information consumption. Instead of actively seeking information and learning new things, they may rely on language models to provide answers. This can lead to a lack of engagement and a failure to develop critical thinking or conversational skills, further failing to improve their productivity.

Concluding Remarks

In conclusion, integrating advanced language models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT creates an increasing difference between productive and non-productive people. Productive people will continue to grow more productive. In contrast, less productive people will become lazier and comparatively less productive than their earlier versions.

As access to information and tools becomes more straightforward, it’s essential to use these resources effectively and stay focused on them. Language models provide both options to you: become productive or become lazy.

Now, what you will become, comes to your choice!
