Day 6— “Find a new podcast to listen to.”

Before we get into the topic, you’ll be surprised on how many people are even familiar with what a Podcast is and how it works.

A very interesting survey on Podcast Familiarity carried out in 2022 by Edison Research within USA sampling population revealed, that there is a great deal of confusion out there among the Americans who have heard the term but have yet to listen to a podcast.

Fortunately, that percentage continues to shrink as time goes by!

The report shows that podcasting is popular across all age groups but only 62% of Americans 12+ ever listened to a podcast.

According to their latest publication on the Top Podcast Genres in the U.S, Comedy is the most popular genre followed by News or Politics and Society.

Have a look at some of the results from the survey and see for yourself!

Ready?

Let’s go!

Firstly, for the ones who are new to the concept of Podcast or have heard about it but have not really given a shot, let’s start with:

What is a Podcast?

In layman terms, a podcast is basically a digital audio file that you can download or stream from the internet.

It is similar to a radio show that we used to tune in back in the days to listen to news, latest happenings, etc.,

BUT, with one major difference: - Podcasts can be listened to on-demand.

They are usually created by individuals or organizations and are normally focused on a specific topic or theme.

Now that said, you may have a question on your mind that we have so many tools available to us, why should we even listen to a Podcast?

Why listen to a Podcast?

From business to health and wellness, podcasts offer a wealth of information on a wide range of topics which then helps you to learn new things and gain new perspectives in life amidst changing times.

One of the biggest advantages of podcasts is its accessibility.

You can listen to a podcast anywhere, anytime and on any device too, be it your tablet, laptop, PC or your smartphone.

All this just makes it a great option for people who are always on the go or have busy schedules.

So, how do you find a Podcast and most importantly how do you find a Podcast suitable for your personal growth and development?

Similar to a radio channel, you need to first find a podcast app or platform that you like.

There are many options available such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Google Podcasts (you may find some of these apps pre-installed on your devices too!)

Once you have your chosen app ready or downloaded, search for podcasts by topic or name.

When you find a podcast that you like, subscribe to it so that new episodes are automatically downloaded to your device when they become available.

For example, if you’re interested in self-improvement, you could search for keywords “personal growth” or “self-improvement”. This will give you a list of podcasts that you can explore.

Another option is to use podcast discovery tools like ‘Listen Notes’. These tools take the effort out of you to find podcasts by providing recommendations based on your interests. If you like, you can also browse through curated lists of podcasts to find new shows to listen to. Check the link here to know more!

Finally, once you’ve found a podcast that interests you, it is then important to make the most of your listening experience. And one way to do this is to take notes while you listen. This helps you remember key points and ideas and also serves as a reference for future learning!

Pro-Tip: Listen to podcasts during your downtime. I do too! For e.g. while you’re commuting to work, doing household chores or exercising. This allows you to make the most of your time and turn the otherwise unproductive moments into opportunities for learning and growth :)
