With the nature of work going towards remote, more businesses today turn to freelancers for creative projects like product photography. Outsourcing work to a freelance photographer presents many advantages, but it is not suitable for every business. Let’s break down the pros and cons of going the freelance route, and see how it compares to hiring an in-house creative team.

Freelance Photographer

If your brand or business is just starting, going freelance may be better for several reasons. One of the biggest is being able to get the full package in one. The behind-the-scenes work is just as important as the photography! Proper prep leads to stunning deliverables.

What most fail to realize is that freelance photographers wear multiple hats on the job. Not only do they produce amazing photos, but they are also responsible for everything from start to finish — client acquisition and communication, prop shopping, photo styling, lighting, retouching, delivering, and everything in between.

Freelance Pros

  • It is efficient if the project is straightforward and requires little oversight.
  • Remove the need to invest in expensive photo gear or studio space.
  • It is perfect for getting a few photos at a time.
  • Save money by leaving the creative direction to a skilled professional.
  • Take advantage of no overhead costs.

Freelance Cons

  • Depending on project needs, one person may not be able to “do it all” while matching the caliber of an in-house creative team.
  • There may be too much back-and-forth if expectations and scope of work are not laid out from the start.
  • Excess micromanaging may lead to a freelancer dropping the client.
  • The company must accommodate the freelancer’s schedule.
