RK Learns Cocktails: The First Shot

Look, I love booze. It doesn’t help that I live in the booziest city ever (In DC, happy hour runs from 4pm-9pm, and missing bottomless brunch is on par with the level of ghastly social faux-pas that missing church is in the south). But also, I did study wine briefly with the intent of becoming a master sommelier (I got as far as WSET Level 2 before realizing it was an expensive pipe dream).

Now that I live on my own, and have enough income to afford building up a Grown Up ™ home bar, I’ve been playing around with cocktails. Here’s the menu so far:

Coctail 1: Deadline Dodger

Vodka
Lemonade
Lime juice
Maraschino liqueur
Creme de Violette
Lemon bitters
Garnished with strawberry
And the pressing knowledge of all the deadlines you have.
Served up, just like your time.

Cocktail 2: Damnit, Okay Deadlines

Vodka
Lemonade
Maraschino liqueur
Creme de Violette
Dry vermouth
A growing weight upon your shoulders as you realize you shouldn’t be wasting time watching Netflix
No strawberry. No time (or thyme).

Cocktail 3: The Toronto
Like Manhattan, but a bit easier to drink.

Whiskey
Sweet vermouth
Maraschino liqueur
Angostura bitters
Orange bitters

Cocktail 4: A Tall Drink of Somethin’
A variation on the mojito, which my drunk ass confused with a mint julep, hence the name.

Spiced Rum
Lemonade
Lime juice
Maple sugar
Muddled mint

Serve with collards. And a weird nostalgia for Atlanta, even though it’s a hot mess right now.

Cocktail 5: Walden, Cliff Notes Edition
I think it’s like an Emerson but I kinda skimmed the details when reading how to make it so idk?

Gin
Sweet vermouth
Lime juice
Maraschino liqueur
Bitters

Cocktail 6: Walden Pond, Post EPA Budget Cuts
Its a really ugly version of an Emerson.

Gin
Lime
Sweet vermouth
Creme de Violette
Maraschino liqueur
Sorrow and regret.
(Its actually super tasty though).
