How to make supermarket shopping more fun for children!

Picture this. It’s 5pm. Traffic in London is gridlocked. The children who’ve had a super energetic day in the Summer sun are fading quickly and the moans and groans have started getting louder and louder. Then you realise the fridge is empty and you need to head into a busy supermarket to get super-mum ingredients for the food that ‘magically’ appears on the table each evening.

You’ve got a range of options. The classic Waitrose, which you like as you they stock a certain type of pasta, Tesco’s as the children like the outdated little spacerocket ride at the entrance or the Sainsbury’s on the corner, but parking is always tight.

We realised recently whilst we were planning our Wholefoods Highstreet Kensington parties (FYI… every Wednesday of August), that shopping in big supermarkets with the children can really suck! So we’re hear to help…

We’d recommend three options to help you with your supermarket dilemmas!

  1. ) It doesn’t matter where you shop, as you can play our epic Sharky & George games wherever!

Yep… these magic games will keep the children constantly entertained and distracted from sneakily adding marshmallows into the shopping cart or by the cereal box cartoons luring them into an animation haze. These games can make shopping with the children actually fun!

Sir Spamalot!

Similar to ‘Simon Says’, Sir Spamalot has the rights to make the family do what ever he or she says in the supermarket!

“Sir Spamalot says everyone has to hop one legged in the frozen isle”, “Sir Spamalot says last person to find the Spinach is a rotten egg”, “Sir Spamalot says first person to high-five a shop assistant wins”… You get the idea. Sir Spamalot changes ownership at each supermarket isle to give everyone a go as the spam master… and the first person who picks up a can of Spam gets to nominate someone to do a dare!

Muted Shopping List.

Shopping lists are great. But how many times do you leave them at home!?

This game gets the whole family involved in some supermarket fun, and is basically a game of charades where you have to act out the needed item of the shopping list, without speaking. The person has to guess the item in 3–5 guesses before returning with the said item!

Fake teeth speak out!

Heard of ‘Speak Out?’ Well it’s hilarious. If you haven’t here is Reese Witherspoon giving you an example…

Seriously hilarious stuff!

This is our Sharky & George supermarket take on a classic boxing day game… with less saliva!

Cup your lips over your teeth like you have fake teeth and put your hands behind your back. Now you have to tell each other the shopping list in the middle of the supermarket and retrieve the items within 2 goes.

It’s hilarious when you arrive back with a watermelon when you were suppose to get hair-shampoo, plus you get some seriously odd looks in the supermarket! (…. The attention is great character building for the little ones!)

2.) Isn’t children whining for unnecessary supermarket items the worst? Then try home delivery options…

Giving you more time to play Sharky’s Footsteps in the living room or an extra hour to make the most of the children’s summer holidays. Yes please!

Try your favourite supermarkets home delivery option, delivered at a time that suits you. It’s a simple one, but something we’ve found very effective for both meal and playtime planning!

3.) Go local. And organic.

We’re a big fan of our local shop, especially the organic ones. Not only does it help out the local community and environment to shop locally, but you often build relationships with the shop owners and staff.

London has a huge amount of organic shops, plastic free supermarkets and markets — we especially recommend the seven Wholefoods markets dotted around the city. Not only because we’re doing our awesome Summer Shop & Drop Parties every Wednesday until the end of August but because they have the best quality products and there is nothing better than fresh, organic produce!
