In the buzzing. streets of urban India, where poverty often casts a long shadow over the aspirations of countless children, a beacon of hope and education emerges. Pehchaan The Street School, a transformative initiative, stands as a testament to the power of education to break the chains of poverty and provide a pathway to a brighter future.

Pehchaan, meaning ‘identity’ in Hindi, was born out of the determination of a few individuals who believed that education could be a catalyst for change in the lives of underprivileged children. The genesis of Pehchaan The Street School can be traced back to a small group of passionate volunteers who, armed with nothing but a whiteboard and a handful of books, ventured into the crowded streets where destitute children eked out a living.

These volunteers recognized that these children, often engaged in menial jobs to support their families, were being deprived of the fundamental right to education. With a vision to empower these children and offer them an opportunity to break free from the cycle of poverty, the idea of Pehchaan The Street School was conceived.

Akash tondon is the founder of Pehchaan The Street School.

Some words by Akash tondon who is the founder of Pehchaan The Street School:-

He said that The idea was to inspire people with access to high-quality education to take it upon them and make education accessible to those who are denied it. We decided we should be the first one to give these children ‘Pehchaan’ and we made our first engagement – teaching a batch of 5 students without any roof to cover our heads or any infrastructure except the roads to sit on. As the day went, people started recognizing our efforts and they appreciated our mission and realized how difficult it must be to manage a class on road. And like a Christmas miracle, the slum people gave us an empty temple as a haven to take this noble cause forward. Our journey started with less than 5 volunteers and 10 children and now we are teaching more than 1500 underprivileged children

The early days of Pehchaan The Street School. were marked by the challenges of operating without a formal structure. The makeshift classrooms were set up on the sidewalks, under the open sky, amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. These unconventional classrooms became a heaven for children who had never experienced the joy of learning before.

The founders of Pehchaan The Street School embraced a holistic approach to education, addressing not only academic needs but also providing basic amenities like food, clothing, and healthcare. This approach aimed to create an environment where the children felt valued, cared for, and motivated to learn.

Financial constraints also posed a significant challenge. Pehchaan The Street School relied on donations and the tireless efforts of its volunteers to sustain its operations. However, the team’s unwavering commitment to the cause kept the initiative afloat, and gradually, the community began to recognize the positive impact of Pehchaan The Street School.

As Pehchaan The Street School. gained traction, its impact on the lives of the children it served became increasingly evident. The initial makeshift classrooms evolved into more structured learning spaces, with the support of donors and well-wishers.
