Title: I finally invented something that works!

Review: Great Scott! We did it Marty! This book is the compilation of my life’s work. 2020 was such a horrible year that I set out to create a manual with the help of Joe Walser and Bob Gale to give future time travelers (pun intended) a head start on building their own time machine! With the goal to warn other time travelers in the future to NEVER, under any circumstances should they visit the year 2020. Inside this book you will find information that has never been released to the public! Many of the parts I used were vintage military and locally sourced parts that are extremely hard to find. Now with the help of this manual you too can build your own time machine! Joe and Bob went through and diligently put all my notes, sketches, and technical diagrams into a beautiful hardcover Haynes manual for all builders, fans, and time traveling enthusiast to enjoy! I hope you enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed helping with it.

Review: Seriously, incredibly detailed. Whoever wrote some of the technical stuff in this must honestly believe this is real, because the way it’s written, it makes it seem like it might actually exist. And I can’t believe I actually have to say this, but a friend of mine picked this up off the shelf and said words out loud that my ears heard, so I have to say it. This will not help you turn a normal DeLorean into one that looks like a time machine DeLorean. It is not a how-to book, it is a work of fiction, and a very good one. It’s not going to give you instructions on how to make an actual flux capacitor replica for your DeLorean. Sorry Dan.

Review: I have been waiting for a good tech book for the Back to the Future franchise for decades. When Haynes announced this release, I was very excited. While the book advertised as being the end all reference for the DeLorean time machine, I was hoping Haynes would go the route of the Ghostbusters Ectomobile book, and cover everything related to Back to the Future. That didn’t happen, and that’s fine. It wasn’t the expectation (just the hope). The book they did release, however, in some ways they did fall short of expectations. Don’t get me wrong. You get to know TONS about the DeLorean time machine from the original Back to the Future movie. But that’s about all that’s comprehensive.

The star of the first movie (the car, of course) is meticulously documented. You get a comprehensive report on how the time machine components work together. You find out what the flux capacitor actually does. You find out why 88 MPH is the magic number to time travel. You learn about how the nuclear material works in the car (mini-nuclear reactor of course, but did you know how it worked?). You find out how all the little do-dads and thingies strapped onto the DeLorean work, along with all the internal tech thingies (time circuits and more). All of this and more. It’s a VERY good look at a Doc Brown’s time machine and how it works.

So it’s great to get the wealth of info on the original configuration of the time machine. From there the book goes way down in quality material when it comes to information on the flying DeLorean from Back to the Future 2, and the rail running/50’s time circuit DeLorean and locomotive time machine from Back to the Future 3. Don’t get me wrong. You do get some insightful information on both that you cannot find anywhere else. It’s just there is a lot, and I mean a WHOLE LOT, of information missing that should be in a book like this.

First off, the DeLorean from Back to the Future 2 is merely mentioned and illustrated. There is no technical details whatsoever on how the “hover mode” works. Is it high speed superheated air pushing from the wheels (seem to make the most sense, but they don’t tell you)? Is it anti-gravity or mag-lev (they elude to “no” in an unrelated entry, but don’t confirm)? Is it something else? We don’t know because there is no explanation and no schematics or illustrations to help answer that. You do get a decent entry on the Mr. Fusion with a detailed diagram as well as a little explanation. However you also have to put the pieces together yourself if you want to understand how it actually works. As a little bonus, you get some fun details on hoverboards. However any other cool future tech like pizza hydrators, E-Z Sleep devices, smart clothes, Slamball bats or those other futuristic cars will not be found in this book.

As for Back to the Future 3, you at least get more details and explanations than there were for BttF 2. There is a fair amount of coverage for the modifications that had to be made on the DeLorean to work in that movie, mostly focused on the time circuits redesign with 50’s technology. While they took time to talk about it, there wasn’t enough to really make the leap of faith that this box of vacuum tubes can replace a microchip from the 80’s. Even worse when you add Doc Brown’s time travelling locomotive. No explanation at all on how he got that to work, but you get diagramed illustrations that label the parts. While some of that helps answers questions like how Doc Brown could generate the level of electricity needed, it doesn’t explain how he was able to get the other high-tech parts to work (like how he could make a flux capacitor or tachyon emitter in the 19th century?). I get it. BttF is more a science fantasy series, especially the further you go into the movies. However this is Hayne’s chance to try and make sense of the technology, and instead I feel like they just swept a lot of that under the rug.

Much of the book’s writing is done in the form of Doc Brown’s journal entries. At first I thought I wouldn’t like this, but it’s actually a really nice look into the events before and during the movies. You gain some additional perspective on the technology as well. I will agree with another reviewer on the font size of the journal. It’s done in cursive writing, and NOBODY writes cursive that small. I understand they have to fit it all in the confines of the book while keeping the stylistic approach, but still, it’s not the best way to relay information.

Hayne’s DeLorean Time Machine (Doc Brown’s) Owners Workshop Manual is still a great buy for those of you who want to know how that car can travel through time. It’s just not the content-packed tech manual that would make it the end-all book for the Back to the Future series. It’s not even the end all book for all of the versions of the DeLorean and other time machines in the series. In spite of this, I still strongly recommend it. Just know what you’re getting.
