You don’t have to be crass to stand out

In my recent soul searching, I’ve spent a lot of time looking at what others are doing with their online brand to stand out.

With all this talk about authenticity, many of the people I see come across as copycats of someone else. They use the same tired tactics in their language, visuals and even their physical appearance to create an unforgettable persona.

Let’s look at some of the things that people are doing. If you are doing these things, please don’t be offended. Many of the people I admire do these same things. But too many of us overdo it.

Crazy colored hair

I used to read a popular blogger who rocked tomato-red locks. Which was fine.

Until I joined her Facebook group. At least everyday I’d see a profile picture with someone else doing the same pose with the same color hair.

Same thing goes for smurf-blue. And rainbow. And….well, I think you get it by now.

Talking like they just finished a prison sentence

It’s important to find your voice. To know who you are and talk like it.

But do we all have to use such offensive language?

The constant potty mouth, sexual innuendos and alcohol references get old fast.

Just like the crazy hair colors, there are some people who can pull this off. Because it’s who they are. But it doesn’t work for anybody.

You don’t have to drop f-bombs and say s$%t every other word to get business. We’re not all hormonal adolescents who are impressed by how many boxes of wine you drank last night or how many penis jokes you can work into a sales letter.

Going overboard on the money talk

Yes, I like money. Yes, I don’t mind talking about making more of it.

But is that all you can talk about?

How shallow does it sound when every sentence out of your mouth is about how you’re set to break six or seven-figures this year?

What value are you really bringing to your clients when all you talk about is yourself?

The other scary language is when people say that they’re breaking five-figure months after only being in business a couple of months. That’s great.

But what about those people who were your clients during the beginning? They’re going to feel taken advantage of by an amateur when they find out you’ve only been in business for 90 days. Control your message.

No one wants to feel like you chewed them up and spit them up so you could brag about your 20k month.

Manifesting mindsets

It’s great to have a good attitude. But if I hear anyone else talk about mindset work I’m gonna scream!

The only thing you need to be manifesting is clients and income (or content, if you’re a writer like me).

While we don’t want to hear about money all the time, I want to hear that all your manifesting and mindset work boosts more than just your attitude. What about your bottom line?

Where I stand

I’m still working on it. Somewhere between the rainbows and unicorn crowd and the potty mouths, I guess.

Yes, I have a tattoo. But I don’t have blue hair and the only thing I’m manifesting at this moment is an appetite. I’m off to get some lunch.
