I posted this tweet on Jan 27th because not a day goes by that the mainstream media does not attempt to erase the voice of the millions of millennial voters who support Hillary Clinton, especially the millions of young people of color who support her by wide margins. I posted this because conventional wisdom says I should support Bernie Sanders, however other than his atrocious position on guns and immigration reform, there is one thing that really stands out to me.
In 1999 Hillary Clinton visited House Majority Leader Tom Delay (R-Texas) who had adopted his children from foster care and they hatched a plan to make life easier for foster kids who age out of care without having been adopted, it also incentivized adoption of non-infant foster youth. These provisions created a system that provided federal funding for independent living programs for foster kids. She took an issue that no one wants to talk about, because it makes people uncomfortable and she got something done. That speaks volumes about her ability to lead, she wasn’t in elected office, she wanted to make a difference so she did. You can’t say it was for votes or for donations, because foster kids don’t have voice or a lobby, and she made our lives better because it was the right thing to do. I was a foster kid and my life was made easier by her action on this issue.
Hillary Clinton is fighting every day for all of us, and that’s why I support her. I don’t need empty rhetoric and neither do the hundreds of thousands of kids in foster care. It isn’t an issue in this campaign, but the system needs greater reform and I believe Hillary will deliver again when no one is looking.
