My shuttle journey to Puerto Viejo was far-reaching but of the most picturesque order. Misty mountains, deep nested forestry, running rivers, tropical plantations and the odd cow chilling by the side of the road.
My journey was around five hours with a twenty minute break in the middle where me and a fellow traveller took to a small 'soda' restaurant where I had Costa Rican rice and beans with some root vegetables on the side, as well as a pack of plantain chips for the road, all for the competitive price of £2. Bargain.
The next day I spent most…
Two things to know about typography is that there are fonts, and there are typefaces. How do they differ? A typeface is one of many varieties of a font. Therefore a font is a collection of typefaces. Montserrat is a font, and the associated typefaces would be Montserrat Light, Montserrat Regular, Montserrat Medium and Montserrat Bold. You get the idea.
Please note: I am using Montserrat simply because it’s a free-to-use font at the time of writing.
What we want to identify, is how many typefaces should be used. We go for 4 typefaces. One that is light, one that…
We’ve mentioned a few times the idea of Design tokens in previous chapters. So what is the meaning of it? First of all, tokens are not implementation-specific. If you think about defining variables in Sass, it’s great for usability in the context of Sass, but not usable in any other.
In a small fishing village north of Agadir is Taghazout. South of Morocco nestled by the North Atlantic Ocean, it’s a popular location for surfers. As I walk around the village I observe the local sellers who sit in pockets of make-do seating selling wooden souvenirs, woven baskets, homegrown produce and vibrant coloured dreamcatchers. The strings of a ribab instrument pass me by as I take a seat at the windy bay restaurant.
It’s paramount as part of our foundations to define the colours — and the only colours — used for our Design system. Sorry that I spell colours the British way ;)
When you think of colour, you usually think about the designer’s taste, but there is more to it than that and it’s hugely significant when building UI. Colours can have an impact on both mood and behaviour.
“Colors, like features, follow the changes of the emotions.”
Looking at this excellent illustration from Joshua Seong, we can see how colours relate to our moods.
Noosa is a small town with a lot of charm. If you’re looking for a place to party, then this isn’t really the place for you.
However if you want to see breathtaking views of the beach with spots like Dolphin view and Hell’s peak (yep… sounds a bit dark) then go for it.
The coastal walk is a must, but don’t forget your bottles of water. It can take 3 hours each way to venture through to the Sunshine coast. …
“All you take from Fraser Island is your memories. The only thing you leave behind are your footprints.”
This island — protected by the National heritage list, ensures that nothing changes about it. Not even koalas are allowed to be sent there even with the mounds of koala habitable trees.
This, plus a plethora of information on the island’s history was provided by a tour guide known as Mike for the Discovery tour. We got picked up at 05:40 in the morning (ouch!) and made our way to the island.
We got picked up in what looked like a tank…
Our journey north to Noosa was approximately an hour and a half from Brisbane. We rented a 4x4 because we wanted to venture away from the straight and narrow M1 motorway.
