The 21-day habit-building challenge, is it really worth it? You must have heard much about the 21-day challenge because it has gained significant prominence. Furthermore, everyone uses this as a hook to attract clients to their businesses, whether it be a course instructor providing their free course or any fitness instructor teaching fitness techniques for 21 days. But what does this actually mean, and does it really take 21 days to build a good habit? Let’s explore this further in this article.

Understanding 21-Day Habit Building Challenge

The notion that it takes 21 days to build a habit is actually an experiment. Initially proposed by a plastic surgeon, Dr. Maxwell Maltz noticed that his patients took almost 21 days to adjust to their new appearances. Hence, people widely practice the 21-day habit-building challenge. They believe that continuing the same thing for a prolonged time helps them to make it a habit. However, this is not true in all cases, and no proven scientific facts exist. Additionally, it is essential to understand that the duration of habit-building varies from person to person.

Talking about my experience, a long time back, I tried 21-day meditation challenges but could not complete them and couldn’t build the habit. After a few years again, I tried a 21-day yoga challenge and continued it for exactly 21 days. But I never felt I had built a new habit with this 21-day technique because I couldn’t continue it. Therefore, there are many things to consider in order to build a new habit and continue it further in life.

However, if you want to follow the 21-day habit-building challenge, I suggest you follow these ways to make the most out of it:

Passionate

The first and the basic thing to build any new habit is to be passionate about it. Whether it be building a fitness habit or a book-reading habit, you should enjoy doing the task. Otherwise, at some point in time, you will lose interest and totally avoid continuing the habit. Therefore, before starting any habit-building challenge, you should deeply consider whether you are passionate about it. If not, then going for it for almost 21 days is a total waste.

Regarding my habit-building challenge, later, I became very passionate about yoga and meditation, and it did not even take me 21 days to do it. It started on autopilot after a few days, and now, I don’t even have to think about doing it. This is the power of passion, which proves that following the 21-day rule for building a good habit is not necessarily essential.

Consistency

Once you are passionate about something, you will want to do it for a longer time. Moreover, the main reason behind the 21-day habit-building challenge is the power of consistency. Doing specific work for 21 consecutive days helps people create a pattern, and if it continues for a longer period of time, it becomes automatic. You don’t have to think that you must do that task because it will happen in autopilot mode without you even noticing. Nevertheless, continuing this challenge makes you start implementing positive change, cultivating a sense of discipline.

Setting Realistic Goals

Setting realistic goals is important to make the most of the 21-day habit-building challenge. If the goals are unrealistic, the challenge might be boring in the future, and again, you will start avoiding it. Therefore, focus on one specific habit at a time to ensure it is built within the timeframe. Setting a realistic goal can give you a sense of achievement, boost your motivation, and build good habits for a better future.

Tracking Progress and Accountability Partner

Tracking progress is an important step in the 21-day habit-building challenge. Reviewing your progress daily ensures that you stay motivated throughout your journey. You can also use various tools and techniques to track your progress, such as tracking apps or journaling.

Additionally, having a friend or joining a community with the same interests can provide needed help and support to stay consistent throughout. If you cannot find people with the same interests, you can choose your family members, partner, or friend as an accountability partner. They will ensure that you never miss a day to complete your task and keep you accountable in your habit-building journey. I did the same and had someone to help me stay accountable, making me more disciplined and focused towards achieving my goal. 😇😇

Examining The Worth

The 21-day habit-building challenge is only worthwhile if you follow the abovementioned points. Ultimately, it is not only about building a new habit but also about self-growth and discipline. By forming any new habit, you must have a deeper understanding of your own capabilities, determination, and resilience. Furthermore, it reminds you that change is possible, and with consistency and strong commitment, you can easily transform your life for the better.

Even though it did not take me 21 days to build a new habit, I’m not totally against this idea. The idea itself is great and interesting, and anyone can easily take up the challenge. Additionally, this challenge helps people kickstart their journey toward personal growth and self-discipline.
