13th’s Cinematographer Hans Charles to Participate in BRIC FLIX Panel

Professor Hans Charles, Cinematographer of the Oscar-nominated documentary “13th,” by Director Ava DuVernay, is among the talented cinematographers hailing from Brooklyn and beyond who will gather to share perspectives on their craft at BRIC Arts/Media House in Brooklyn. The panel will take place Wednesday, May 10, 2017 from 7pm-9pm.
From artistic wisdom around creating imagery and emotion, to the technical aspects of lighting and shooting a film, panelists will engage in a dialogue that illustrates various filmmaking approaches and techniques. The collaborative filmmaking process and integral role of the DP will be explored, while audiences also gain insights on how the cinematography field is evolving.
Each panel participant is expected to provide a clip of their work to share during the discussion.

Charles recently worked on Selma director Ava DuVernay’s documentary 13th, which examines America’s prison industrial complex and its effect on African Americans from slavery till now. The 2016 film, named for the Thirteenth Amendment, was nominated for an Academy Award. 13th also won a BAFTA and Peabody.

Hans Charles is is a tenure track professor of Cinematography at George Mason University in Virginia and a former professor of Cinematography at Howard University. Hans’ most recent feature work was Ava DuVernay’s Oscar nominated documentary 13th. He and Co-host/film partner, Menelek Lumumba host a weekly film podcast called the Back of the Theater podcast. They are currently raising funds via Indiegogo to produce the film 1 Angry Black Man. Mr. Charles resides in the District of Columbia with his family.
