Miami Historian Paul S. George captivates audience with a history of South Florida during ‘La Florida’ event at Fort Lauderdale History Museum

An attentive group of artists, art advocates and history buffs were on hand at the Fort Lauderdale History Museum on Sunday, January 8, 2017 to take in a captivating discussion and slide show presentation by History Miami Museum’s Dr. Paul S. George. Dr. George discussed via a vivid slideshow, the history of South Florida during the time of ‘La Florida.’ Hispanic peoples’ contributions to art and culture from 1600’s to now’ were highlighted including the impact on creative professionals from Cuba.

The artist reception and conversations about Florida’s historic Latino culture was held during the City of Fort Lauderdale monthly Jazz Brunch on the Fort Lauderdale Riverwalk along the New River. ‘La Florida’ is a presentation as part of January’s events for “Reinterpreting the Pioneer — An Outsider Art Exhibition” exploring South Florida’s diverse history and culture presented by Clare Vickery of Grace Arts Fl.

Attendees also participated in an informal discussion with Pedro Pablo Pena, Founder & Artistic Director of the International Ballet Festival of Miami & members of the Miami Dade Hispanic Cultural Arts Center.

Showcasing new visual art were Artist/Retired Optometrist George Cheskes aka Doodleman and Isanusi Garcia Rodriguez, an Afro Cuban Artist formerly with the National Ballet of Cuba in 1999 joining the Miami City Ballet in 2001 as a principle dancer until 2012. Rodriguez transitioned from dance to art after suffering a devastating brain aneurysm in 2013.
