Facebook’s algorithms are designed to “connect” people and simply put, that’s their business model. What is not so apparent is the criteria that drives the algorithm. Shrouded in advanced technology, and corporate secrets, and the ubiquitous reach Facebook has worldwide, there is no ethical accountability or much of a discussion of what a free service that is inserted into billions of personal lives is responsible for.
Fake news connects the like-minded and connections are the Facebook mission -not creating an ethical online space to interact.
It seems that fake news is just a symptom of Facebook connection algorithms, not the main event. Influencing Facebook users to connect by a multitude of suggestions embedded into the news feed design builds networks that sell advertising.
Fake news is the tail wagging the dog.
