Introverts Are People Too You Know

It seems that lately, introverts have become quite popular on the interwebs. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s great! I, myself am an introvert and can appreciate a good article educating the masses about how to better engage with people like us. In this ever-changing, ever-evolving world, from one introvert to another, after reading many articles and seeing what works and what doesn’t, here are some things most experts (and I agree) believe we as introverts need to be more mindful of.

We are good thinkers and we love to reflect, meditate and find purpose. We often produce clear ideas and clear solutions in consequence. However, we do need to be mindful of our thoughts. They can quickly become negative, leading to worries and bad places often ending in depression. It takes a lot of self-awareness and practice to overcome negativity. So how do you do it?

Try redirecting your thoughts, if you catch yourself worrying, interrupt your thoughts with something positive and let that positivity grow into other thoughts. You can also work on your breathing. Take that negative thought and slowly breathe out counting up to 10 and exhaling. If you’re able, surround yourself in nature, taking off your shoes and soaking up the sun’s energy. Release all that negativity from your body into the ground. Resting your mind, recentering your soul.

One common theme in all introverted lives, is we all come from troubled pasts we fully regret. A lot of us grew up in unfavorable environments and therefore have had a difficult time adjusting in the real world. Most of us have been teased or bullied thus making us feel unwanted and outsiders. We’ve spent countless hours replaying our past choices in our minds, wondering what we could’ve done better had we had the opportunity.

We need to forget the past, as we have no control over it and let go. We need to live more in the now, live in the present. Cherish the people we have become because of our failures and bloom into our best selves.

While we are blooming from caterpillars into butterflies, it is also important to always push ourselves outside of our comfort zones. It’s important to love what we do as we’ll find no meaning in what we’re doing if we don’t care for it. We need to actively push ourselves to try new things, engage in new projects, try new recipes and build our qualities and our values. Increasing our resilience — our ability to quickly recover from difficulties when faced with them.

Most days, it’s hard pushing ourselves outside our comfort zones. Often I find myself crawling back into my shell, sheltering myself from the world and any form of potential danger. We need to learn to push past our desire to be isolated from the world. Yes, we thrive on our own but we need to find the balance between being by ourselves and actively engaging with society. Making ourselves fully rounded people.
