After working at the Wall Street Journal, the Boston Globe, and the Washington Post, Lolly Bowean has landed her current job at the Chicago Tribune, but it probably won’t be her last stop.
Through this assignment, I definitely learned a lot about journalism and behind the scenes action. Lolly taught me a lot about the process of finding a story to write about and actually choosing to write it. I never realized how many pitches journalists can get in a day. She definitely turned me on to the possibility of being a general assignment reporter because it is a great opportunity to write about some of the most random stories but also having the option to write about topics you are already passionate about. “So, you could be covering breaking news or you could be doing enterprise stories or you still have the news of the day, but there are also slow periods, so when you don’t have an assignment, there’s a need to be able to create an assignment and to be able to kind of develop ideas and so that’s why it’s nice to have some areas of focus that you can look for, that you can always have some story ideas percolating in the back of your mind,” Lolly Bowean, general assignment reporter for the Chicago Tribune, said. One aspect that really surprised me was that she did not really care about how she covered Barack Obamas inauguration because it was not something she was passionate about covering, it did not “have as much impact on my heart.”
