I long to peer into eternity and catch a glimpse of the heavens or even have the opportunity to touch the hem of His garments. I long to experience the manifest presence of His glory, weighing so heavy upon my frame, that the only thing I can do is lay there helpless before His feet. I long to be awestruck!
Yet I find myself restrained by the dullness of my dermis, as I have grown numb over the years of stimulation. Saturated by foreign elements, these chemicals have contaminated my wineskin. Fermented and bitter to the taste, the poison refuses to hide behind the pleasant appeal of sweet grapes.
Merely vessels and earthen in approach, we collect rain water from these city clouds as they disperse the chemicals. Poisoned by modernity we fight to stay relevant and find ourselves drunk off of the spirit of the age. Culture is weakening our vessels and leaving us incapacitated. We lay helpless before the enemy, as he tramples over us in the alley ways of our conscience.
I can’t help but reflect on the importance of keeping a watchful and sober mind. Our adversary is at every street corner, trying to pull our eyes from the road so that he can claim our lives in a fatal accident. Yet, we always seem to stray off course accidentally. I mean, who plans their own demise? We find ourselves at these crossroads by the small choices that we have made. What seemed to be small compromises, have had an unequivocal amount of impact in the direction of our lives.
The church body likes to toss around the concept of radical change, conveying sudden or immediate transformation. In doing so we have created a misplaced expectation, leaving believers stranded as they wait on God to change their lives. When lives aren’t immediately changed, fingers are quickly pointed at God in great offense. But, God is so good that He gave us Himself. He ascended to Heaven and sent us the Helper. So if it’s help that He offers, why do we pull ourselves out of the equation and expect Him to do everything for us? How is that partnership?
For it is through prayer, that we become empowered by grace to overcome that which has held us under oppression for decades. We’ve been armed to make war and triumph over the evil that haunts us. We are called not be conformed to this world, but transformed by the renewing of our mind, that by testing we may discern what is the will of God, what is good, acceptable, and perfect.(Romans 12:2) With God’s partnership through His spirit, WE can overcome. So….
“Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel SET-APART as holy… Useful… Ready for every good work…” -2Timothy 2:21–22
