Review the various communication theories that relate to persuasive writing (These can be found in Chapter 2 of your textbook and the week two powerpoint). Can you give a practical application of a particular theory to how you would write something on behalf of a client or employer ? Please explain your example.
Cognitive dissonance could be used in the case of British Petroleum (BP). I think it could be practically applied when addressing the 2010 oil spill. The majority of the public still associates BP with the oil spill. However, the partnership with Dawn dish soap has greatly improved their reputation. I think a way that BP could use the theory of cognitive dissonance to their advantage would be to provide statistics for the amount of aquatic wildlife they have helped in the past few years (oil spill related or not). They have partnered with many wildlife organizations and have committed to helping the reefs. So, I think that by providing facts about the positive things they have done since the spill, they will cause the public to change their opinion.
