Research. Research. Research.

The aim of the first experiment was to explore what is could be taken and what could be improved from BLOCK research group’s concrete shell fabrication.

So here is the method we thought we would follow:

Materials we were going to use.

Materials:

  • General purpose cement
  • Choice between sand or small aggregate
  • Choice between muslin or stretchy polyester fabric
  • Braided wire
  • Wire nodes
  • Timber (for structure)
  • Wire mesh (for reinforcement)

Method

  1. Get the Z-axis from the 3D digital model
  2. Construct timber frame
  3. Put wire through holes and hold it in place using wire nodes
  4. Place fabric on top of wire and secure into place
  5. Mix cement and aggregate, while experimenting which mix would better hold the structure
  6. Apply concrete mix to structure with the wire mesh in between for further reinforcement
  7. Once dry, release from the mold

Things to explore

  • Different concrete mix ratio
  • Different fabric for molds
  • Wires
  • Wire mesh grid size
