What immigration detention did to my mental health.

I too am embarrassed by the lack of humanity exhibited in many of the comments to this article. Thank you for writing about your experience, Graciela; it takes a brave heart to share with strangers the impact on your life. Let’s get beyond the ‘status’ of citizenship and get back to treating people like human beings regardless of status, even when a person is detained. What is appalling to me are the deliberate actions to dehumanize people, treating them like objects. Would we want a family member or loved one treated poorly if they were taken into custody? No. ‘Status’ should not matter. Unfortunately, we are witnessing similar experiences in many areas of American society: travelers entering the country; those who are arrested; those who forgot to put on a turn signal; etc.
