As you may well know if you have watched any of my construction YouTube Vlogs I am passionate about my job and about inspiring others to join the industry as an engineer, in particularly women. However, as much as I always want to give a balanced view on the job, I must be honest and state that I do shy away from sharing the uber dark side at times.

It’s been a tough couple of weeks for me on my project, having seen a deadline date come and go and experiencing my first emotional breakdown on site! On reflection, I found myself asking “should I really be encouraging women into an industry that has some real dark sides to the job?”. I’ll give you my conclusion at the end.

So, what do I mean by dark side? Crime, murder, drugs, corruption? Well… yes! It’s no secret that the construction industry contains some pretty hardy figures. After all, there are numerous highly physical, less glamourous jobs that require more brute force than brains and understandably, these can sometimes attract certain characters.

Over the past 12 years I have worked alongside convicted murders, powerful drug dealers, men who have been convicted of sex offenses, armed robbery, GBH and to be honest, the list is endless. The majority of these guys have been open about their offenses and I have never really felt unsafe working alongside them. However, this doesn’t mean that it has sat well with me. After all, I have seen several fights and altercations on site that normally have anyone calling 999 in a heartbeat.
