First Important Lesson of 2016

This year began with insurmountable challenges for me.

Having to find ways to cope with them, I spent some free time reading about important figures in historical events.

Perhaps, I had hoped that the lessons of the past can be wisdom.

Interestingly, as I dwell deeper on decisions made by those important figures — with hindsight and third party observation — it is easy to point out their mistakes.

Yet, if I were to put myself in their shoes, very often, given their choices, their environment, their identity and their aspirations, I sincerely think, I wouldn’t fare any better.

I came to realize, as much as I can conduct myself in the best manner deemed possible, there will be events that are not within my control. When that happens — when I must bear responsibility — I will remember to have compassion towards self.

Compassion has a healing property that will ease into past transgressions and forgive them. It certainly helps me accept with serenity the things I cannot change. Giving me courage to work towards changing things that I can.

Now, it is not to say that compassion can be used as an excuse for all failings. But I believe this simple act of compassion, can lighten the load, building confidence to stride onwards.

After all, is it not wisdom to know the difference?
