Forward: This article was written in 2016, the year I received my green card and eight months before Donald Trump was elected as President of the United States. Politics and US immigration has changed since then as the immigration clampdown by the Trump administration has gotten tougher, even on legal immigrants. However, much of what I wrote in my experience as a STEM immigrant from a “Priority Date” country still holds true.
