A pedigree is a genetic representation of a family tree that diagrams the inheritance of a trait or disease through several generations. The pedigree shows the relationships between family members and indicates which individuals express or silently carry the trait in question.

Purebred means the animal’s parents are of the same breed, whereas pedigree means its breeding history has been recorded.

The pedigree refers to the genetic background of an animal, although it is sometimes applied to people as well. A purebred dog, for example, comes with a verified pedigree, a list of all past parentage. While commonly used in animal families to track genetic diseases, they can be used for any species and any inherited trait.

Pedigree analysis is therefore an important tool in both basic research and genetic counseling. It is sometimes called a family tree, lineage, or ancestry chart.

Non-pedigree:

Non-pedigree or mixed-breed dogs have both advantages and disadvantages. One advantage often cited is that mixed-breed dogs, by their very nature, have good genetic diversity, which in most cases promotes good overall health.

Difference between pedigree and non-pedigree

Pedigree dogs are purebred (both of the Dog’s parents were the same breed) and have their ancestries recorded and logged by the Kennel Club. Well-bred purebred dogs are tested for possible genetic faults that could be passed down. Breeding dogs are also often Champion show dogs who are deemed as a perfect example of the breed.

Non-pedigree dogs could be purebreds without papers or crossbreeds. These dogs may or may not be tested for health and temperament. Pedigree dogs have up to five generations of family history recorded and are completely purebred. If you buy a purebred without Kennel Club pedigree papers then technically it is not purebred as you have none of the Dog’s ancestry recorded to prove it.
