It must be a mountain thing. Up here anyone with a fairly common name has a nickname to distinguish him or her from the others. Fireman Jack, Musical Pete and Vietnam Jack are a few that I can say without offending anyone. Most of them refer to some physical or mental attribute that is less than kind and yet most of these people refer to themselves with these nicknames with no rancor whatsoever. When I lived in Los Angeles, we just used peoples last names. Go figure.
