I love the way you work between the concepts of “gender,” “color,” and the (somewhat? to most?) less emotionally fraught “genre” to demonstrate your thoughts. Personally, I’m tired of boxes and the way they’re politicized to create or take away power. I’m pretty sure that gender is a spectrum, with everyone falling somewhere across a wide range. Most identify at the male or female ends; but since everybody defines what those mean differently, the majority would actually fall somewhere in-between. And, if we could take away the either/or buckets, maybe we could do away with the stupid-ass laws like the current, unconstitutional HB2 here in NC. Maybe we could celebrate all forms for once, taking away the stigma and making it as simple and apolitical as “My favorite color’s blue” vs. “my favorite’s red.” A fantasy land, I know, but it’s good to have goals.
