Interesting. Sadly, most Republicans seem to have moved continuously to the right, shifting people’s perceptions of liberal and moderate. There is much in your Arizona article that sounds like here in NC but also even some of the northern states I’ve lived in. Here it’s just awful — we’re run by the most immoral of the immoral, and we were the laughing stock of America several times until Trump came along to claim the crown.

I’ve not had much reason to study McCain (even when he was running for president I didn’t see anything that would begin to sway me from Obama). Certainly he’s an opportunist and he’s been willing to compromise to keep his seat. But he’s still managed to sound more statesmanlike on occasion than the average Republican, and of course every non-Republican in the country is now openly hoping that his illness has rekindled his sense of decency starting with the healthcare bill. We just need a few to buck the party for each major vote.
