It’s a horrible, heartbreaking culture in America. I’ve now apologized for my original response because I now understand how people of color read my words, but my sadness lingers and probably will forever. I don’t understand how more white people don’t see how we’re all diminished by racism.
As for Justine’s case — Jordan Bray made the great point that perhaps the Somali policeman who shot her might actually have PTSD from his experiences growing up there. Generally, though — as in the white cops who have gotten off — I view the “fear” defense as a cop-out (no pun intended!) — it’s either an outright lie or if they truly fear black skin so much that they can’t handle a simple traffic stop without killing someone, they shouldn’t be carrying a gun.
America’s gun culture? A whole ‘nother rant…
