Once in Awhile

Image his — or maybe David Montgomery’s? :-D

Once in awhile, you meet someone who works hard for the justice and equality of everyone in society and not just their own demographic. Who supports women, people of color, immigrants, and LGBTQ, as well as the generally downtrodden who have too little voice in our culture. Who writes tirelessly on their behalf, and is a true ally in the best sense of the word.

Once in awhile you meet someone willing to do the jobs that so many others are unwilling to do. Say, paramedic, or AIDS research. Who has not only looked death in the eye but held people’s hands till the light went out.

Once in awhile you meet someone who can both think critically — a rare and cherished skill these days — and also has the moral fortitude to discuss many subjects both intelligently and compassionately. Someone who will speak out for others when many are silent.

Once in awhile you’ll find someone who truly and passionately loves their family, appreciating their virtues, understanding their failures, and accepting them for who they are. Who takes their pictures from every which angle. ;-)

Once in awhile you’ll find a friend who you can count on to be there for you. Who will have kind and sage advice across many issues. Who will generally respond at all sorts of weird hours. Who would literally hand you the keys to their house if you needed it. Who can make you laugh.

When you find someone who is all of these things? You need to celebrate their lives.

Happy Birthday, @alto!
