You don’t have to be black to “get it.” By the time we reach adulthood, everyone has seen death, knows fear, worries about our loved ones. We white folks have the luxury of feeling it less frequently, but we Can understand how it feels. Those who don’t get it simply because the victims are black, choose Not To. More than that, most of us can name numerous friends and family members who committed minor crimes, receiving warnings or a slap on the wrist by police; they certainly didn’t fear for their lives. To suggest that anyone on the news “deserved what they got” is beyond insensitive. So yes — you should be angry. Everyone should be angry. To be anything less is to compromise your own humanity.
