Ant’s Evolutionary Defense Mechanism?

An ant mill also known as a death spiral is an undesirable phenomenon observed in some colonies of social insects, such as ants, bees, and termites. It occurs when a group of insects becomes disoriented and forms a continuously rotating circle. The insects follow each other in a single path, usually clockwise, and repeat the same path without making any progress.

The exact cause of this behavior is not known,

• In some cases, it has been suggested that it is a defense mechanism, as the spinning motion can confuse or disorient any predators that may be present.

When a group of ants is threatened or disturbed, the ants will form a circle, with the center of the circle being the most threatened ant. The ants will then move in a clockwise direction, gradually increasing their speed as they go. This is an attempt to protect the center ants from the threat. This behavior is believed to be an evolutionary adaptation that helps ants survive in hostile environments.
