I think that when you are getting started on this path it makes sense to bring in external experts (such as yours truly), but ultimately if you rely on 3rd parties to provide industry guidance without building an internal knowledge base and corporate governance to make correct technology and vendor decisions you are at risk of ending up in consultant/vendor hell in the long term. There is a happy medium for every organization — but having core expertise internally is key to keep consultants, vendors, and integrators honest.
