AngularJS Reddit Clone Progress

AngularJS has been quite a rollercoaster!

We haven’t even been back in class for 2 weeks yet, but it feels like we’ve been grinding away with Angular for a month. The highs were high, the lows were low; overall, AngularJS is easy to pick up but can get very complicated very fast. I’ve definitely had a love-hate relationship with it for the past few days. At the same time, it’s hard to imagine going back to frontend development without an advanced framework.

I have met the requirements for the Reddit clone, but today I’d like to add some extras. Right now you can’t delete posts or comments, but that shouldn’t take too long to implement. I’d like to torture myself by implementing user login and authentication, however. Right now anyone can go to the site (deployed it on Heroku yesterday, boy that was a fight) and add posts and comments, and edit any post. Additionally, I’d like to have a better understanding of cookies and sessions.

Yesterday, the g45 web dev cohort presented their capstone projects! They’ve been working really hard for the past 2 weeks (I think some may have started 3 weeks ago) and yesterday we got to see the culmination of all their hard work. I remember when we first saw their Q2 projects, my classmates and I were really impressed and also anxious about whether or not we ourselves would be able to tackle similar feats. Well, they’ve gone and set the bar extremely high again.

Many of them created applications using software stacks that they had not been taught prior to the start of their capstone projects, yet everyone was able to deploy presentable, working applications. It was obvious that each of them pushed themselves really hard, and that they had each earned the title “Software Engineer.”

One of my fellow classmates mentioned getting that same prior feeling of “oh man, are we gonna be able to do stuff like that for our projects??” It is a little bit overwhelming to think of our own capstones right now, but the presentations were also very motivating. If g45 can do it, so can we! In fact, I woke up this morning with wireframes on my mind. Before I could complete my morning routine, I had to sketch them out. As time goes by, my large scary weightlifting competition running dream application is becoming less and less scary as more ideas trickle in.

I popped open my React tutorial on codeacademy last night, and although I probably should have gone back to redo parts of the tutorial that I forgot, I had a much greater appreciation for React thanks to Angular. I haven’t gotten into anything super complex with React yet, though, so I think I’ll hold off my judgments/comparisons till then. But so far, I like it!

And here’s a couple of random tidbits: training is going well, managed to cut down from 57kg to 55.5kg, which is a good training weight for me. I set a new personal push press record of 61kg/134lbs this week, which feels good, it had been a long time. Push press is one of my weaker accessory lifts, mainly because it has taken me a long time to get the technique right.

When competitions are far away, it’s hard for me to be as excited or focused for training as I should be, but the focus is coming back. Last weekend, three of the lifters at my gym competed for the first time and they all did great! Going to meets to cheer on teammates or to volunteer gets me hyped for training. Also, we got to witness another seasoned teammate do extremely well and also appear to push the limits of his flexibility further than he normally does:

David is fine. Video footage: https://www.instagram.com/p/BWnWk1MB84v/

Uhh, what else do I got. Oh, I deleted most of the app links from my phone’s homescreen in an attempt to be less distracted. I’ve also started unsubscribing from tons of emails to reduce distraction and temptation to buy things I don’t need. Feels good.

That’s all for now.
