Story of the two imbeciles
Geet and Raji were best friends from a small town, Pandupur. They were mischievous and known for their naughtiness in the whole town. Their antics earned them the name — two imbeciles. Although it seemed frustrating in the beginning the duo did not care much later on.
It was a cloudy, dark evening. On their way back from school, one day, Geet and Raji saw that an entire village — Belaku — was out of power. The place had some kind of eeriness to it. They disembarked the bus and went to enquire the plight of the village. They were told that the place had not got electricity yet and that the government had had sanctioned it. The girls returned to their town disappointed and thinking how to help the villagers.
The girls reported this newly learned information to their fathers, alas! It fell on deaf ears. The town collector uncle, the councilor aunty, no one helped them and in return shooed them away. Raji bumped into the local electrician — Kiran, of the town, one day. She immediately mentioned about Belaku being in dark without electricity and requested him to fix their issue. Kiran promptly refused to the request. Later in the day, Raji narrated the encounter to Geet. Disappointed with this progress, the girls decided to brainstorm a solution for this problem.
Geet suggested that they meet up with Kiran again and gather information about the process to get electricity. This was immediately put to action. Soon after the school, the girls ran to the Electricity Board Office (EBO). Unable to find their contact, the duo made way to head home. To their surprise, someone called out one of their names.
“Raji, what are you doing here?” asked Kiran.
“We came to meet you, Kiran uncle. We really need your help,” chimed the delighted duo in chorus.
Sensing the nature of request about to hit him, Kiran managed to nod a yes and welcomed them to his desk. He quickly added, “Is this about the electricity in Belaku?” If that is the case, then I really have no authority. And I really cannot help.”
The girls were not frustrated for this time around they had a plan.
“Kiran uncle, we are not here for that. We want to know how electricity comes to our homes?” asked Geet.
“Ok. Although, knowing you two, I sense some kind of hidden agenda with this question, let me answer it carefully,” said Kiran.
Raji added, this is for our science project at school uncle. So please help us.
“Electricity gets generated and routed to a power grid. Like the one you see outside the town gates. The huge machines and poles. From there lines are drawn to transferable light poles placed at strategic distances. Further from these pole wires are drawn to our home and gets recorded through the meter box,” explained Kiran.
Thanking the electrician, the girls made their way home to put their next plan in action.
During their visit to Belaku, they had noticed that there were electric poles installed, wires drawn, and a small power grid just outside the village. It was time for them to test these wires hanging from many poles. Managing to sneak a bulb from the school, the girls reached Belaku, grabbed a wire and tested it for the flow of current. The tester showed positive current. They realized that the village had the electricity, but politicians and bureaucrats had cut the power to their homes. The girls taught some young girls and boys on how to make filament from scrap. They made huge numbers of light bulbs made of scrap. In no time, the village was lit with lights.

Surprised by this news, all the politicians and bureaucrats landed at Belaku. They understood what the naughty imbeciles had done for the good of the village. The collector immediately called to make sure the girls were rewarded for this action. Their determination on helping the villagers and focus on applying the solution, brought them laurels. Their efforts and action earned them a new title — The terrific duo.
Geet and Raji, since then built more clubs with the help of the government to create awareness about basic facilities to many nearby villages. Whether two imbeciles or terrific duo, the girls’ portrayed immense focus and determination to achieve their goal. Belaku is now a beautifully lit bright village.
