Great advice, and best of luck to “John”!

Just wanted to add: One of the “forces pushing this scale-it-up, go-big-or-go-home mirage” is very likely the myth of the need for VC funding.

The lore these days is that you put together a business plan, launch/get funded, then scale. And if you want to be funded by a VC, you have to be aiming to be a unicorn. Peter Theil explains the reason for this nicely in his book “Zero to One” — it has to do with the power law distribution of the start-ups' returns. The end result is this exact mirage —go big or go home.
