Principally, I think ideally, you’re right, but I don’t know that it would be wrong or not progress. The film medium is about showing people pretending to be people they’re not and weaving those scenes together to coax an audience into being absorbed into a story. If you’re so far off that you’re getting SJ to play a character based off a Japanese woman, then yeah, you’re going to be hard pressed to fool someone. But when Brazilian Wagner Moura plays a brilliant and convincing version of Colombian Pablo Escobar in Narcos, is that wrong because he isn’t actually Colombian in reality? Where do you draw the line between narrative and documentary?
