I don't get why people are so obsessed with jewellery!

What kind of utility does jewellery have for people to spend so much money on it? That people spend their savings - sometimes, savings accumulated over years - on something as stupid as this, is something that is just beyond me.

Gold, Diamonds, Gems - what is common here? They shine..they just shine! That's it! It's OK for toddlers or monkeys to get excited about or get attracted towards something like this, but adults too?..and to such an extent that they are willing to spends lakhs on them?! What for?! Just vanity? Just so they can show off what they can afford, to people. To project some kind of an image that says, this is the place they occupy in society and that this is their 'level'. Gold doesn't even look good honestly - but that's just my opinion and maybe slightly besides the point..or is it? There's a lot of other types of jewellery that looks good and is much much cheaper if you're looking at accessories (or whatever such stuff is called) that would go with what you wear..or something that (you think) would enhance your looks. There's kundan jewellery for instance, which, in my opinion, looks much better..and is dead cheap. I remember my cousin buying jewellery for his fiance - I went to the market with him. He bought this really nice-looking kundan set that costed about 3000-5000 Rupees. At their wedding reception, his wife chose to wear this set - over what? - over a diamond set that costed about 3 lakh rupees! ..okay, you can say this is about personal tastes and all.. But the point I'm trying make is - if it's purely about dressing and an attempt at 'appearance-enhancement', there are so many much cheaper options out there! ..but nah, what do people want? Yes, gold, diamonds, so-called 'precious-stones' and the like. You know what BTW? These diamonds aren't even so rare and precious apparently...it's just artificial supply-stangulation to make them more expensive..I haven't fact-checked this though. But yeah, why do people still only or mostly go for gold/platinum and diamonds.. To show off, that's all. If it's because they find the shiny stuff attractive..oh well, then I guess evolution from monkeys to humans really hasn't happened properly. ..rude, yeah..sorry, but true.

Okay so chalo, you've bought all that expensive jewellery. Full 'posh' platinum, gold, diamonds and all..now you've to wait for parties and wedding receptions and all to wear it and show it off...and the poshness of the jewellery you wish to display would depend on the poshness of the party. Basic level - one small simple piece.. Middle level - gold that's properly visible ..High level - bloody spread all your most experience jewellery on your bed and jump into it and wear off everything.. It should all show properly, all chamak chamak..like people should feel the need to wear shades to just look at you...or if you feel all classy - just one diamond necklace with the biggest stones possible.. Like so heavy that the necklace makes you walk with a hump and you're like barely able to stand...a little bit of wind from behind and you'll fall on your face...and if you have to lift your face for a selfie, you'll fall backwards.
...plus the whole time you're stressed even mentally..
One - people should look at your jewellery and appreciate it ..like you keep a mental count.."come on somebody look at my necklace.. Ahh yes, one compliment…two! Yayy!..more..chalo mission accomplished" ..if nobody sees it or gives you any compliments, then done.."useless bloody necklace.. I'm getting this exchanged".
Two - The whole time you've to keep checking if your jewellery's on you safely..how much stress that is!
Three - I'm sure it's not comfortable to wear all that stuff…and when you're eating (which is for me the best part) ..doesn't it come in the way? Like, when you bend to stuff your mouth?

Anyway…I'm not claiming any intellectually higher ground or anything. I'm just saying, dude, there are so many other ways to enhance your self confidence and all...projection of a certain personality..I don't know.., your body language, how you talk to people and all, hain na? So many inexpensive ways. All of us or definitely most of us try to dress well/feel the need to dress well..for our own confidence, to impress etc...it can be kept to an extent of dressing decently..dressing well.. Whatever..just so it isn't so awkward.. Dressing to blend in or standout..whatever's your style yo..
But it's stupid..yes dude, here I'm claiming intellectually higher ground.. It's stupid to spend so much on vanity..arreh spend on something that has utility na..spend on experiences na, if you have the money. Why waste on shiny shit?

You know, for my wedding I'm thinking I'll wear a T-shirt and jeans..or tracks!! It'll be so comfortable compared to all those sherwanis and suits and what not for all those hours! ..and yes, for the shock value definitely..and maybe to project my nonconformism, yeah..it would be great fun to see people react to the bridegroom wearing a simple T-shirt and tracks :D
..and I'll ask a friend to stand behind me and take videos and pictures to capture those reactions..it'll be great fun!
