You play like you practice

Extremely true.
When I was in college, we used to have a dance performance every year for which we used to practice a lot.
The first year it happened, no one while practicing smiled. The performance went horrible because you always focused on steps and never on “the performance” (which required you to smile so people enjoy).
No one forgot their steps but the performance was a lousy one.
From next year, while practicing, we made sure that everyone was smiling and really performing for someone (by making some one sit and watch us).
We just didn’t mechanically practice the steps, we started feeling the beats and went in rhythm synchronous with the song.
We’ve been asked to perform “once more” after every performance since then. :)
