All You Need to Know about Footing
What is a Footing ?
Footing is the part of the foundation that transfers the building load to the ground underneath in while not exceeding the safe load bearing capacity of the soil. Usually footing is constructed in brick or concrete under the base of the column to disseminate the load over a large area for the stability of the building. The plan dimension of footing is determined keeping in mind the quality and nature of the soil so as to maintain the safe bearing capacity. The size of footing depends on various factors such as the building height, type of soil and nature of the soil.
Importance of Footing -
· Footings transfer the building load to the soil underneath, thus, maintaining the stability of the construction.
· Footings cannot be changed or repaired throughout the lifespan of the building.
Footings are made by fabrication steel rebars manually at the site. But, this process comes with additional hassles such as -
· Maintaining accurate shape and size will not be possible due to manual error
· Will consume a lot of power for cutting rebars at the construction site
· Requires on site bending by bare hands, which cannot be accurate in size for all
· Since proper mandrels are not used, there is scope for fine cracks which is fully hazardous for the construction
· Gives scope to lot of wastage due to errors
· Elongates the foundation process, so the total construction period takes longer time to be completed
