Set Free for Freedom

“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1 ESV)

When we have lived most of our lives a slaves — slaves to sin and self — it is difficult to resist the pull to return to these masters even when we have been freed. It is like a spiritual Stockholm Syndrome, like hostages becoming enamored by their captors.

But Jesus did not come and sacrifice himself on the cross to leave you as a slave or even to give you just a moments liberty only to be lost again in bondage. You have been set free for freedom. You are now free to not submit to a teaching of slavery and earning like the churches in Galatia.

Today you will be tempted to prove you worth with activity, or to attempt to earn your sanctification or approval before God. Toss aside those temptations and live in your freedom. Know that Jesus has earn on your behalf and there is nothing left to do to secure your justification or your transformation. Rest in your freedom. Rejoice in Christ.
