Showing by the Scriptures

“And when he wished to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, he greatly helped those who through grace had believed, for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the Scriptures that the Christ was Jesus.” (Acts 18:27–28 ESV)

For those in ministry this is a great encouragement. Apollos was a fantastic speaker and he had a wonderful command of the Scriptures. But he didn’t fully understand the gospel, he got repentance and the coming Messiah but didn’t know of the cross and resurrection. He is lovingly taken aside and encouraged by a couple and shown the depth of the gospel. Then he turns on the preach and is powerfully used.

But this story is not only for those in specific ministries, this is for all Christians and an encouragement to see Jesus in all of Scripture.

Jesus tells his followers in Luke 24 that the whole of the Bible is about him, and Apollos preaches the gospel, showing by the Scriptures that the Christ was Jesus. This is what we are invited to. Scripture is not a moralistic list of does and don’ts, it is the revelation of our Savior and we can show others who he is and the grace he pours out, right from all of Scripture.

Be encouraged today to read the Word and see Jesus on every page. Ask the Spirit to reveal to you how Christ is shown, declared or uncovered in all of Scripture and then tell someone else.
