RLS, short for restless leg syndrome, is a sleep disorder that causes an urge to move the legs, usually because of an itchy sensation. One usually experiences RLS while at rest or in an inactive state.

Also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, Restless Leg Syndrome can begin at any age and escalates as you grow older.

Symptoms

· An itchy, uncomfortable feeling in your legs, typically when you are resting or inactive for a long time.

· Relief of discomfort with movement-You may need to keep moving your legs to prevent the sensations.

· Worsening of symptoms at night — You might have difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. Your symptoms may get worse if your sleep is cut short.

· Inability to sleep and staying awake for prolonged periods of time, shaking your legs due to the sensations.

How does RLS affect sleep?

· RLS causes physical discomfort and the compulsion to kick or move your legs while trying to sleep.

· These periodic movements cause loss of sleep and insomnia.

· You might get up from your bed and go for a walk, or massage your legs or shake them to get rid of the uneasy feeling. This may disrupt your sleep cycle as well.

· Loss of sleep causes stress and affects bodily functions as well.

How do you get relief from RLS?

· Soaking in a warm bath and massages- this may improve blood circulation.

· Practicing good sleep hygiene and getting at least 7 hours of sleep a day.

· Exercising regularly, in moderation and for a set period of time.

· Avoiding consumption of substances such as caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol before bed.

· Using a foot wrap or a vibrating pad specially designed to press the feet to get rid of the itchy sensations.
