58% of high-performance employees say they need more quiet work spaces.
William Belk

Sadly, I think most companies know their office environments are horrible. It all comes down to cost. Calculating the cost of lost productivity is a soft science and quickly dismissed. Calculating the costs of cubes vs. real offices with walls and doors is easy. For the people responsible for planning our office space, it’s a no brainer. But hey, free bananas and granola for everyone!

The book “Peopleware” has great section on office environment. I’d highly recommend it to anyone interested in this topic.
