I am Not a Coder & I Made a Web App

Building is easy. Marketing feels like $#!%. This is my story.

All my life I have been fascinated by the internet. So much information at our finger-tips. So much power. We could dwarf Superman if we wished to. :-P

For me being a mechanical engineer, new things always made me eager. Building things simply gives me a high.

With so many plugins around, the resources, the tutorials & the itch to create something, I started off to build a web-app. After fiddling with this idea for around weeks, I finally built a minimal, but functional solution.

http://mycta.cf/

Yes! The domain is a free one. But have done a little due diligence. It is around since more than a decade. So, I gave it a go.

Since the idea revolved around CTA (Click-To-Action) button, I was keen to use the term CTA in the domain.

Hence the name myCTA.cf which is a play of the sentence; My CTA Safe.

Had already rushed home from work to start on this magical journey of mine.

Last check on domain name with my girl, Jo

So, the name was selected in minutes.

I quickly made a rough page using available jquery plugins & a heavy usage of Stackoverflow. I reached here after a few hours. Below is a rough draft of the product. The blue box below is the product. A Click To Action Button on a related article online.

The rough draft just to prove myself that this can be done by me.

The product is fairly simple.

Add CTA to any page one shares.

Use cases can be many.

An AirBNB host can use this to share good articles about this hometown and add a CTA about his/her AirBNB.
An e-commerce seller can share her article posted on a news portal adding a CTA which gets the traffic back to her online shop. The one like below;
100% Natural Mats -> Buy Now

Spent the entire weekend perfecting the app complete with validation & beautification.

Then SEO to better optimize sharing. Included meta tags & og:image.

And on Monday morning, asked Jo to send it to her friends and launch it.

After reaching home, I spent the entire evening working on plans to market the app. Made appropriate links as examples and emailed potential users, messaged all my circles.

2 days passed with me doing this. Nothing great happened. I also realized social media sites does not allow repeated posting of the same link. Stopped immediately once I got warned. Don’t wanna mess with that. ;-)

Now I am writing this wondering about my marketing plan for tomorrow evening.

Clearly, a lot more to learn on this front. That does make it exciting.

Ironically, I built a tool to help digital marketeers. :)

So, be with me in my travails. Also will be sharing a detailed article on how I built this web-app

Constructive feedback is always welcome. And tips to market this, even more welcome. Let’s discuss.

Cheers!
