Spring to Summer

A note on the shapeshifting garden

Mellow warmth of April sun,

Hint of rain in the wind.

A giant white butterfly flitting on paling dahlias,

Cornflowers of drooping blues, going to seed..

Wild poppies give way to maraca pods,

Onion orbs of white magic kiss the fading nasturtium -

And millions (it seems so!) of flushing roses.

Freesia gives way to crocosmia, among lively beds of lemon balm.

Azaleas and sweet williams, wary of the rising heat -

To bloom or not to bloom??

Violets and petunias embracing the soil, determined to remain,

Even if only as mulch.

Wild salvia topple the reign of spirited oxalis.

Honeysuckle strangles the marigold.

High spring drama.

All in eager wait of the bright, bright summer.
