Youtube Music (YTMusic) vs Spotify

One of the important questions for music lovers: YTMusic or Spotify? So, here is my personal list of comparisons:

  1. Spotify is cross-platform — iPad/Mac/Android/iOS. YTMusic, on the other hand, doesn’t have any app for Mac (not sure in general about Desktop app). Because Spotify is cross-platform, you can switch at the exact (almost) moment where you left on one device.
  2. Subscription prices are almost the same. (Even on student profiles)
  3. With Spotify, you can even download the songs and listen offline. YTMusic has this feature only on mobile devices.
  4. With both Spotify and YTMusic, you can share your playlist and even copy other’s playlists. However, Spotify has a much friendly interface to do that.
  5. I really like Spotify’s cool “Sleep timer”. Sometimes, I listen to songs to make me sleep. Y u no have this YTMusic?
  6. Spotify has now an integration with Fitbit while YTMusic doesn’t. Even though Fitbit is now owned by Google! Come on YTMusic!
  7. IMO YTMusic wins on this one — Recommendations — whether it is cold-start or using collaborative filtering (Data Scientist in me actually appreciates this!) Youtube has my data for so long. It knows all my favorites and tastes. And IMO they do a good/decent job at this. On the other hand, I believe Spotify really sucks. Eg. Photo attached. I am the kind of person who likes to listen to some selected songs by an artist in one go. If I am making a playlist by the name of the artist — at least recommend me one of its songs first. Artist >> Genre IMO. Though, some people prefer Spotify’s Genre recommendation compared to YTMusic.
Come on Spotify! Can’t you recommend me at least one of his songs?

8. YTMusic wins again with Google Assistant integration. However, recently I came to know that I can say “Ok Google, Play XYZ playlist on Spotify.” But YTMusic is more seamless. I can just say “Play X song”. Less effort. Can’t blame Spotify! Really glad that at least it has some sort of integration.

9. English vs localized language songs. Eg. some Hindi songs are still not there on Spotify while YTMusic (thanks to Google’s backing) has almost everything. Though Spotify allows you to actually upload your “local songs” in your playlist, it is much more effort.

PS. I used to hate Spotify because of 7–9 above. I wished there was an easy way to switch between YTMusic and Spotify without doing all the work from scratch. Now, with my playlists in place (kinda), I like Spotify more (mainly because of point 1)
